Re: Plans and Activities for the rest of 2007

It is a pleasure for me to report to you some of the things that are currently taking place in the Society.

Congress of Social Sciences and Humanities-2007

For the second year, we are participating in the Congress of Social Sciences and Humanities under the auspices of the Association for Canadian Jewish Studies.  The Congress will meet at the University of Saskatchewan, and our meeting will be May 27-29.  As it now stands, we will have eight presenters, all of whom will appear on Tuesday, May 29, as well as a joint panel with ACJS.  While somewhat less than the number of presentations we had last year at Toronto, it is a very good showing, especially considering the long distances many of the presenters must travel to get to Saskatoon.  Many thanks to Daniel Maoz, who chaired our program committee as CSJS Vice President.  A provisional schedule of CSJS presentations will appear later in this document.  For further information about the Congress, as well as registration information, see its
website:
www.fedcan.ca/congress2007

For further information about the ACJS program, see its website:

Annual Meeting

Our Society will have its annual meeting at the University of Saskatchewan on May 29 (see the provisional schedule).  Those who would like to put an item on the meeting's agenda should get in touch with me (
ira.robinson@sympatico.ca ).  Anyone who wishes to be nominated for a position in the Society's executive, should get in touch with our Secretary, Cheryl Jaffee ( cheryl.jaffee@lac-bac.gc.ca  ) no later than May 15.

Celebration of Jewish Studies in Ottawa

The CSJS, along with the Zelikovitz Program in Jewish Studies at Carleton University, the Vered Jewish Canadian Studies Program at the University of Ottawa, and the Lowy Collection of Library and Archives Canada, is sponsoring a conference entitled "A Celebration of Jewish Studies in Ottawa".  It will take place at Library and Archives Canada October   24-25, 2007.  The call for papers for this conference, in English and French,  will appear later in this document.   The deadline for presentation proposals is April 30, 2007.  Proposals should be sent to Cheryl Jaffee. This conference is significant in that it is the Society's first initiative beyond its cooperation with the ACJS.

Society Discussion Group

So far, more than 200 postings have appeared on the CSJS discussion group.  If you have not yet become a member of this group, I urge you to do so.  If you are a member already, it would be good if you could post the Jewish studies activities taking place on your campus so that we would all be able to know the true scope of Jewish studies in Canada.

Web Site

If you have not yet visited our web site:
www.csjs.ca , I urge you to do so.  You will find a wealth of information there.  Suggestions for the site's improvement should be sent to me.  Many thanks to Howard Gontovnick who has taken charge of the website and its modification.

I hope to see as many of you as possible at Saskatoon in May, and in Ottawa in October.

All the best,
Ira Robinson
